Can we include that a good recipe doesn't spring ingredients on you midway through the instructions that aren't on the list? The NYT has an infuriating standard of omitting water from it's ingredients list and then suddenly you have to have quarts of it ready on hand. Some other places suddenly say "Add salt and pepper" where it's not on the ingredients list. MADDENING and sloppy in my book.
Great information. I love when there are visual cluesvgiven so you know what to expect. Even if you're a decent cook, if you've never made the recipe or it's a new technique, it guides you to success. I hate that more recipe writers don't adhere to these principles - the problem is AI, content generators, and algorithms.
This is the most helpful post on recipe writing I have ever read. I will take your advice and change the way I write immediately. I cannot wait to try this and see how my readers enjoy it. It will be much more fun to write recipes with a personal touch. Thank you, David!
Bravo!! You were spot on with this post, now can I forward this to the sites I visited in the past and wound up with a disaster because I over-rode my common sense and followed the recipe "as written".... Another of my favorite red flags is the so called 100 year old family heirloom recipe great-grandma made that calls for an ingredient like cool-whip!
Such good points!!! I love recipes that manage to make me smile and I always try to do the same, within reason of course, because AI isn’t going to do that 🤖

Thank You David for your fantastic site
Brilliant, Deborah!! Yes, those generations-old recipes that seem to defy time are something!
And this is why I always check your site FIRST when I'm searching for a recipe that works and is going to be delicious.
Wow, thank you, Ellen! 💋
Great tips for developing and writing my recipes. Thanks!
Your way with words is amazing! Would you consider offering a recipe writing class?
I certainly would!! that’s a great idea! Please write me privately.

No, it will not, Betty! (At least not yet!)
Wish I’d seen this before my pavlova died a terrible death. 🤣🩷
JP, we can have a service if that will help....
A memorial would be lovely. Pav would have been so pleased.
Good Ole Pav. May she rest in peace.
“Whispered wisdom,” “toddlers on colon cleanse” such winning phrases this beautiful article has. Kudos!
Why, thank you, Annada!
